For this project part of the appeal was the idea of situation a unique potentially antiquated field in the present. Part of growing up in a home surrounded by culture and Irish folklore also means that I was surrounded by artworks and fanciful drawings of Irish folklore.
Several of my courses revolved around digital literacies or rhetoric in digital spaces. Furthermore, I began to pay attention to how most knowledge was available online and how accessibility to rhetoric and information was increased through online and digital presence.
The inclusion of AI art in this project was meant to serve as a visualization of Irish rhetoric and folklore for those who have never experienced it firsthand. The goal of incorporating AI art into an online platform was also geared towards situating this research in a digital landscape that allowed for greater accessibility and understanding of rhetoric for viewers who may not otherwise be familiar with it.
In the past several years, one of the social trends that I have observed was Artificial Intelligence art created through specialized writing prompts and then put into an AI art generator. There have been many examples of this since Chat-GPT launched in 2022, but AI art is more specialized and can format images and incorporate different aspects or characteristics into images based on one's detailed descriptions.
While discussing non-thesis options, I realized I wanted to include visual representations of Irish folklore and rhetoric and that I wanted to try and call back the practical wisdom that I had grown up with in a new way and gift it to others.
In exploring various generators I ultimately decided to use DALLE-3 to help me create the images and to create the database that you see throughout this project.
Furthermore, as I began to explore Irish rhetoric, storytelling, and folklore more deeply, I also realized that the art of visualization through Aisling (vision or dream poetry) worked in tandem with my desired execution of phronesis.
A picture is worth a thousand words, and these images are meant to not only be appealing but also long-lasting and are meant to pass on the wisdom of the Irish.
